Munyi pushes back on DP summons, warns of legal fight over support for UDA

Embu County Senator Alexander Munyi Mundegi has pushed back against a disciplinary threat issued by officials of the Democratic Party (DP), insisting that his support for the ruling United Democratic Alliance (UDA) and President William Ruto is lawful and protected by court decisions.

Through advocates Danstan Omari and Cliff Ombeta, the senator warned that any attempt to remove him from office would be met with a fierce legal battle.

Addressing the media on Wednesday, Omari said they received instructions from the senator after he was served with a summons requiring him to appear before the DP disciplinary committee within 72 hours or face expulsion.

He said the summons was dated November 18, 2025, a period when Senator Mundegi was in Uganda on official business, making it impossible for him to attend or respond in person.

Omari said the senator only became aware of the letter after returning to Kenya, proceeding to Parliament and forwarding the summons to his lawyers, who have since issued a formal response.

The advocates said the disciplinary action arises from the senator’s role in campaigning for UDA candidates during recent parliamentary by-elections in Embu County, where DP candidates lost.

They argued that Senator Mundegi’s actions were lawful, noting that DP and UDA entered into a memorandum of understanding that was duly ratified by both parties through their respective National Delegates Conferences.

According to the lawyers, the memorandum was deposited with the Political Parties Tribunal and the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) and remains valid, having never been vacated or withdrawn.

Omari maintained that, by virtue of the agreement, DP is part of the Kenya Kwanza political arrangement and cannot discipline the senator for supporting UDA candidates or the President.

The advocates further claimed that DP has only two elected leaders at the national level, Senator Mundegi and Cabinet Secretary Ruku, who was elected as a Member of Parliament on a DP ticket before joining the Executive.

They said Senator Mundegi is currently the only elected DP legislator contributing Sh10,000 monthly to the party, alongside four Members of County Assembly from Meru County.

Omari alleged there was a plot to remove the senator from office to allow unnamed individuals to gain access to party funds, stating that DP receives millions of shillings in public funding annually and that Senator Mundegi is the sole signatory to the party’s accounts.

The lawyers said the senator has no intention of resigning and has instructed them to publicly affirm his support for President Ruto, UDA and Deputy President Kithure Kindiki.

They cited existing court decisions which, they said, bar the removal of an elected leader from office unless they voluntarily resign.

The advocates also cautioned leaders of the Democracy for the Citizens Party (DCP), associated with former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, to keep off DP affairs, saying the two parties are distinct.

They insisted that Embu County is firmly a Kenya Kwanza region following recent electoral outcomes and dismissed any attempts to interfere with the senator’s mandate ahead of the 2027 General Election.

Senator Mundegi, they said, remains defiant and prepared to defend his seat through legal means for the remainder of his term.
