Warrant issued for former NEDP official in Sh2 million fraud case

Former NEDP Executive Director Daniel Onsomu is wanted after a Kibera court issued a warrant for his arrest over alleged fraud involving Sh2.05 million.

A Kibera court has issued a warrant of arrest against former National Economic Development Party (NEDP) Executive Director Daniel Mokua Onsomu after he failed to appear in court to answer fraud charges involving more than Sh2 million.

According to court records, Onsomu has not attended proceedings since June 11, 2026. The court initially issued a warrant for his arrest following his absence and renewed the orders on June 24 after he again failed to appear.

The prosecution alleges that between September 8 and October 6, 2022, Onsomu obtained Sh2.05 million from complainant Daniel Nyakundi Osiemo by falsely claiming he could assist him in obtaining information concerning a parcel of land.

Court documents state that the accused allegedly received the money with intent to defraud and knowingly made representations that were false.

The warrant was issued after Onsomu failed to attend a scheduled mention of the case.

His advocate, Mose Nyambega, had sought an adjournment through a letter dated June 22, informing the court that he was unable to attend proceedings due to a knee injury sustained in an accident.

In the letter, the advocate stated that he was unable to walk and therefore could not effectively conduct the matter before the court.

Following the absence of the accused, the court directed the Officer Commanding Station (OCS) at Lang’ata Police Station to trace, arrest and present Onsomu before the court.

The case adds to a series of legal challenges facing the former party official.

In 2022, Onsomu was arraigned before a Makadara court on separate charges of obtaining money by false pretences from individuals seeking political and employment opportunities.

In one of the counts, prosecutors alleged that he obtained Sh120,000 from MCA aspirant Ruth Kemunto after falsely promising to secure her a United Democratic Alliance (UDA) nomination ticket ahead of the General Election.

He was also charged with obtaining Sh137,000 from Sophia Gacheri by allegedly claiming he could facilitate her recruitment into the National Police Service.

Onsomu denied the charges and was released on a cash bail of Sh100,000.

His name has also previously surfaced in a dispute within NEDP, where former Nairobi Governor and party leader Mike Sonko suspended party activities amid allegations that some officials were soliciting money from individuals seeking opportunities within the party.

The matter is scheduled for mention on July 23, 2026, when the court is expected to receive an update on efforts to locate and arrest the accused.
