BABY PENDO MURDER SUSPECTS YET TO PLEA TO THE CHARGES

The high court will give a determination on July 25, 2024, whether eleven police officers implicated in the murder of Baby Pendo in 2017 should be charged with murder.

The ruling emanates from a preliminary objection the suspects filed challenging recommendations of Independent Police Oversight Authority to charge them

The officers submitted that only Inspector General is to be held responsible for the offence.

However the prosecution opposed their application citing that the commanders had the responsibility to prevent the offence and report immediately it occurred

The inquest had found police bosses who served in areas that were marred by electoral violence in 2017 culpable of death of Baby Pendo in Kisumu County and other serious offences that occurred there

The twelve (12) police commanders served at the height of the post-election violence and their lieutenants who were in charge of various units and formations were deployed to quell the mayhem.

Besides the killing of Baby Pendo, other offences awaiting them include torture, maiming and sexual crimes against unarmed members of the public.

Some of the officers have since left the National Police Service while others are still serving.
